ED treatment in the Philippines for expats and visitors

ED care in Dumaguete for expats

ED care for foreign residents in Dumaguete and Negros Oriental: doctors, hospitals, online consultations with delivery, pharmacies and prices in dollars.

Short answer

Dumaguete is a smaller city than Cebu or Manila, but ED care is still straightforward for foreign residents. A local GP or internist can assess you and prescribe, online services run by PRC-licensed doctors deliver nationwide, and Mercury Drug, Watsons and Rose Pharmacy have branches in the city. Sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) need a prescription. We are still verifying local urology services.

Where can I get ED care in Dumaguete?

Dumaguete, the capital of Negros Oriental, is a university city with a long-established community of foreign retirees, many from the US, UK, Australia and Europe. Medical care is in English, and doctors are used to foreign patients.

You have three routes:

  1. A local GP or internist. Most ED is assessed and treated in general practice, and many foreign residents already see an internist for blood pressure, diabetes or cholesterol.
  2. An online consultation. A PRC-licensed doctor assesses you online and issues an e-prescription, sometimes with delivery.
  3. A urologist. For complex cases. We are verifying local options; Cebu City is the nearest large referral centre.

We list men's health clinics only once we have verified them from their own published pages. Our Dumaguete directory is still being completed:

Can I see a urologist in Dumaguete?

Possibly, but we have not yet verified it. Dumaguete has tertiary hospitals, including Silliman University Medical Center, and private specialists hold clinics in the city. We are checking which hospitals and clinics offer urology consultations, from their own published pages, and will list them when we have.

Until then, ask your GP or internist for a referral, or call the hospital directly and ask whether a urologist holds clinics there. If your doctor recommends a specialist and none is available locally, Cebu City is a short flight or ferry crossing away and has several large private hospitals; see ED care in Cebu.

A urologist is worth seeing if ED came on suddenly, if tablets have not helped, if you have prostate symptoms such as a weak stream or getting up at night, or if you have had prostate surgery or radiotherapy.

Is a GP or internist enough?

For most men, yes. The NHS describes ED as common and usually treatable, and most cases are managed by a general doctor. Your GP or internist can:

  • take a history and review your medicines;
  • check your blood pressure and arrange blood tests, such as blood sugar and cholesterol;
  • prescribe sildenafil or tadalafil if they are suitable;
  • refer you to a specialist if needed.

ED can be an early sign of heart or blood vessel disease, especially in men with diabetes or high blood pressure, so the check-up is worth doing. See causes of ED.

Can I get ED medicine delivered to Dumaguete?

Yes. Online consultation services issue e-prescriptions anywhere in the Philippines, and several say they deliver nationwide. Their claims, as published on their own sites:

ProviderDelivery, as published
Rocky (GoRocky)Same-day in Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna and Cavite; free nationwide
NowExpressNationwide, free in Metro Manila
&youFree discreet shipping (coverage not stated)
Doctor AnywhereSame-day for requests before 1 pm (coverage not stated)
andSonsNot published

Negros Oriental is well outside the same-day zones these providers name, and none publishes a delivery time for Dumaguete. Allow several days, and ask before you complete a consultation if timing matters. Even without delivery, you can fill an e-prescription at a local pharmacy.

Most of these services do not say whether they serve foreign nationals. Pulse Clinic, which does, has clinics only in Makati and Angeles. Before you pay, ask any service whether it accepts patients on a foreign passport and a foreign-issued card. See the online ED consultation guide.

Which pharmacies are in Dumaguete?

The main national and regional chains have branches in Dumaguete, mostly in the city centre, the malls and near the hospitals.

  • Mercury Drug, the largest chain in the country.
  • Watsons, in the malls.
  • Rose Pharmacy, a Visayas chain that started in Cebu. RiteMed Sildenafil 100 mg at Rose Pharmacy was listed at US$4.17 a tablet.
  • Hospital pharmacies, which dispense against outside prescriptions as well as their own.

Branches in a smaller city may not stock every brand, so it can help to call ahead or to ask your doctor to write the generic name on the prescription, so the pharmacist can offer any registered brand they have.

All pharmacies ask for a prescription. Whether a pharmacist accepts a prescription from your home country is up to them; a Philippine prescription is accepted everywhere. See prescriptions for foreigners in the Philippines.

Larger branches generally take Visa and Mastercard. Smaller ones may be cash only. You do not need GCash or Maya to pay at the counter.

How much will it cost?

Prices on this page show in US dollars by default; use the currency selector for pounds, Australian dollars or euros.

Medicine and strengthCheapest checkedDearest checked
Sildenafil 50 mgUS$0.82 (Erecto, TGP)US$15.25 (Viagra, Watsons)
Tadalafil 20 mgUS$6.58 (Torfil, Watsons)US$17.56 (Cialis, Southstar Drug)

These are prices from the pharmacies' national websites. Dumaguete branch prices may differ a little, and some brands may not be stocked locally. The full table is on ED medicine prices in dollars, pounds and euros, and the peso guide is on tadalafil prices.

What should I tell the doctor?

Bring a list of your medicines by generic name, your heart history and any previous ED prescription from home.

  • Nitrates. Sildenafil and tadalafil must never be combined with nitrates, such as nitroglycerin spray or isosorbide tablets. They are usually avoided after a recent heart attack or stroke.
  • Alpha blockers. Prostate or blood pressure medicines such as tamsulosin or doxazosin can add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect.
  • Diabetes, kidney or liver disease. These shape both the cause of ED and the choice of treatment.

The doctor decides whether treatment is suitable, which medicine, which strength and how often. See side effects and safety.

Bringing your own supply

Most travellers reach Dumaguete through Manila or Cebu. Keep medicine from home in the original packaging in your hand luggage, with your prescription and a doctor's letter, through every leg of the trip. A reasonable personal supply (about 30 to 90 days) is the practical standard. Rules can change, so check with the Bureau of Customs and FDA Philippines before you travel. See bringing ED medication into the Philippines.

Staying safe

Avoid ED tablets sold with no prescription, by street sellers, at markets or through social media. They are often unregistered or counterfeit, and "herbal" products sometimes contain hidden sildenafil, which is dangerous with nitrates. Check any unfamiliar brand on the FDA Verification Portal. See how to spot fake ED pills.

For chest pain, an erection lasting over 4 hours, or sudden loss of vision or hearing, go to a hospital emergency department straight away. The UK FCDO notes that medical care may not meet UK standards, particularly in rural and remote areas, and that private treatment and medical transport are expensive, so keep insurance details and accessible funds. If you live outside the city, in Valencia, Dauin, Sibulan or further along the coast, know the quickest route to a Dumaguete emergency room.

See a licensed doctor

An online consultation with a PRC-licensed doctor gives you a Philippine prescription that any Dumaguete pharmacy accepts, in English, without travelling to Cebu or Manila.
